What is an ADCP, and what does it actually measure?
An ADCP shouts into the water and listens to the echo. Particles drifting with the current shift the sound’s frequency, and from that shift we reconstruct how fast the water is moving — at every depth at once, without putting anything in the flow.
Which ADCP frequency fits my water depth?
Depth picks the frequency before you do: 600 kHz reaches about 70 m, 300 kHz about 160 m, and 75 kHz about 650 m. Buy for your deepest site — you can trade range for resolution later, but you can’t add range you don’t have.
Can I run several ADCPs in one array without interference?
Yes, but you have to play nice acoustically. Our instruments let you stagger ping timing or use different frequencies side by side — on a mooring line we stagger the pings; between adjacent instruments, we change the frequency.
What should I check first when a survey shows data gaps?
Before you blame the transducer, check the usual suspects: the deck-unit cable, the power feed, and the GPS and gyro serial lines. In our experience, most data gaps are a loose connector or a wrong baud rate — not the instrument.
