The River-ADCP-600-FA5 is a 600kHz 5-beam piston ADCP for river discharge measurement. Four Janus-arranged piston transducers with a 20° beam angle deliver strong, stable bottom-echo returns — even in sediment-laden or turbulent rivers where wider beam angles lose signal. A dedicated fifth vertical piston beam provides independent bathymetry.

Why does the FA5 use piston transducers?

Piston transducers produce a tight 20° beam angle, which concentrates acoustic energy on a smaller seabed footprint. This means stronger bottom-echo returns on soft silty riverbeds, loose sand, and heavily sedimented channels — the conditions where wider-angle beams scatter and lose bottom-lock mid-transect. The trade-off is a larger housing (Φ176mm, ≤2.5 kg) because piston elements need physical depth for the ceramic stack and acoustic matching layers, and the POM housing wall thickness scales with diameter for the 50m pressure rating. For deep rivers with challenging bottom conditions, the 20° beam is worth the extra size.
They serve different river sizes. The M9 (9-beam dual-frequency, 0.06–40m, 0.02m cell size) is the shallow-water specialist — maximum resolution in the smallest streams. The 600-FA5 (5-beam 600kHz piston, 0.54–40m, 0.1m cell size) is the deep-river workhorse — 110m bottom-track and a 20° beam angle that holds lock where the M9 cannot. If your rivers are shallow and you need extreme resolution, choose the M9. If your rivers are deep, turbid, or have challenging bottom conditions, choose the FA5.
Broadband is the standard mode for discharge surveys — it provides reliable velocity profiles across the full 0.54–40m range with ±0.25% accuracy. Pulse-Coherent is for specialized near-bed measurements — it offers finer velocity resolution over shorter ranges, useful for boundary-layer studies, sediment transport research, and ecological flow assessment near the riverbed. The instrument can be configured to use either mode depending on your survey objectives.
