What Is a Horizontal ADCP?

Unlike vertical ADCPs that profile down through the water column, HADCPs look sideways

across the channel.

A traditional ADCP is lowered from a boat and profiles vertically — you get a snapshot when someone is on site. A Horizontal ADCP (HADCP) is fixed to one bank, sending acoustic beams horizontally across the channel. It measures a continuous velocity profile along the beam path, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Combine the velocity data with a stage (water level) sensor and channel geometry, and you get continuous, real-time discharge — the gold standard for hydrological monitoring stations.

A HADCP is not just an instrument — it’s part of a monitoring station. Here’s what a typical installation involves.

Mounting Structure

Concrete plinth, steel bracket on bridge pier, or bank-retaining wall. Must be rigid and vibration-free.

Stage Sensor

Companion water-level sensor (radar, bubbler, or pressure transducer) — required for discharge calculation.

Power & Comms

Solar panel + battery, or mains power. Cellular / satellite telemetry for real-time data transmission.

What is the difference between HADCP and a regular (vertical) ADCP?

vertical ADCP (like our Ocean ADCP or River ADCP) profiles downward through the water column — typically deployed from a boat for episodic surveys. A HADCP is fixed horizontally on a riverbank or structure, sending beams sideways across the channel for continuous, unattended monitoring. Think of it as a survey instrument (vertical) vs. a permanent monitoring station (horizontal).
HADCP uses the index velocity method: it continuously measures water velocity along its horizontal beam path. This velocity is correlated to the full cross-section discharge through occasional calibration surveys (using a boat-mounted ADCP or current meter). Once the rating curve is established, the HADCP provides continuous discharge from velocity alone, updated every few minutes.
Coverage depends on frequency, water clarity, and suspended sediment concentration. The HADCP-600 typically covers channel widths up to 90m. For wider rivers, dual opposing HADCPs (one on each bank) can be deployed. Additional models for wider/narrower channels are in development.
 

Yes. HADCP can be installed alongside existing infrastructure — on the same bridge pier, bank wall, or concrete plinth. It complements traditional stage-only gauges by adding velocity data for a full discharge record. We provide site assessment guidance to determine the optimal mounting location.

Routine maintenance is minimal — typically an annual site visit to clean the transducer face, check mounting hardware, and verify calibration. The instrument itself has no moving parts. In sediment-heavy rivers, more frequent cleaning may be needed. We offer maintenance contracts and training for local field teams
