The HADCP-600 is a 600kHz horizontal acoustic Doppler current profiler designed for permanent, side-looking installation on riverbanks, bridge piers, and channel walls. Once mounted, it measures a continuous velocity profile across the channel — 24 hours a day, 365 days a year — without a boat, without a survey crew, and without moving parts.

How does the HADCP-600 measure discharge without moving across the river?

It uses the index-velocity method. The two horizontal beams continuously measure water velocity along their beam paths. This velocity is correlated to full cross-section discharge through periodic calibration surveys — typically using a boat-mounted ADCP or mechanical current meter. Once the rating curve is established, the HADCP provides continuous discharge from the velocity measurement alone, updated every few minutes.

The 4-beam Janus configuration is designed for vertical profiling from a moving platform. In a fixed horizontal installation, two beams provide the cross-channel velocity structure needed for index-velocity discharge, while the vertical beam gives water depth and surface detection. This 3-beam layout is simpler, more power-efficient, and optimized specifically for side-looking fixed-station use.
The instrument profiles up to 90m horizontally, depending on water clarity and suspended sediment concentration. For channels wider than 90m, a common approach is to deploy two opposing HADCPs — one on each bank — each covering half the channel. For very narrow channels (<5m), the minimum cell size and beam geometry may be limiting; contact our engineering team for a site-specific assessment.

The HADCP-600 provides velocity data. A complete discharge station also requires: (1) a stage (water level) sensor — radar, bubbler, or pressure transducer, (2) a mounting bracket — fixed to a bridge pier, concrete plinth, or bank-retaining wall, (3) a power supply — mains, solar panel + battery, or internal battery pack, and (4) for real-time telemetry — a datalogger with cellular or satellite communication

Routine maintenance is minimal — typically one or two site visits per year to clean the transducer face, check mounting hardware, and verify calibration against a boat-ADCP discharge measurement. The instrument has no moving parts. In sediment-heavy or high-biofouling rivers, more frequent transducer cleaning may be needed. The POM housing resists corrosion and does not require sacrificial anodes.
